Gulf Futures Challenge

Finalist: Repurposing Petroleum Infrastructure for Sustainable Energy, Food, and Critical Minerals

Blue Latitudes, in collaboration with other leading academic, industry, and nonprofit partners, (the Team) was selected as a recipients of the $20 million Gulf Futures Challenge award from The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The Team will focus on opportunities to repurpose retired offshore oil and gas platforms to advance renewable energy, sustainable seafood production, critical mineral recovery, and marine habitat conservation in the Gulf of America. The project’s first phase will identify candidate platforms using FishLAT and integrate renewable energy, aquaculture, mineral extraction, and ocean monitoring technologies to inform regional strategies for transforming offshore infrastructure into long-term environmental and economic assets.
